One question that’s surprisingly hard to get information on is which developers are making games without the use of generative artificial intelligence. Knowing what games were developed or are being developed without the use of generative AI allows consumers to make an informed decision when purchasing. It’s also nice for other developers to have examples of successful software development without AI at a time when many major studios (or at least their leadership) seem eager to adopt it.
Two very popular and long-lived games come from developers who have been critical of artificial intelligence use in game development. In an interview with Game Informer Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone stated his opposition to using AI in his creative endeavors. Tarn Adams, the creator of Dwarf Fortress, has also criticized AI use and indicated that its not something he’s very interested in.
Unfortunately, there’s not really a comprehensive source at the moment for information about what games that are being actively developed don’t include generative AI content. Game studio Polygon Treehouse, which made the games games Röki and Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, has created a No Gen AI seal for game developers to use. The seal is based on the honor system, so there’s no legal guarantee being given, but it’s still a welcome way to help game developers who don’t use generative AI and gamers who want to play games without generative AI find each other.
