Principles of Cognitively Engaged Computing

When I put together this website, I hoped that providing a software list would be just a stating point and that I would find other ways of supporting software development.

As part of that effort I have been working on a framework, which I call Cognitively Engaged Computing. The aim of Cognitively Engaged Computing is to ensure that computing tools do not harm human cognition. The framework follows a set of key principles:

  1. Tools should not diminish human cognitive capacity through their use.
  2. Tools should engage their users in such a way that avoids cognitive surrender.
  3. Tools should be explainable.
  4. Tools should be honest.

These principles represent an initial, high level description of Cognitively Engaged Computing. I hope to continue to expand and refine these concepts and how they can be applied.
